Ballinacurra Creek to Punches Cross, Limerick

The Limerick Southern Green Route, Ballinacurra Road scheme is a continuation of public transport investment in sustainable transport measures along the southern route corridor towards Limerick City centre from Dooradoyle. Phase 1 of the scheme is currently under construction and due for completion in early March 2014. The scheme will join the existing bus priority measures along St Nessan's Road, the commercial centres around the Crescent Shopping Centre and Mid-Western Regional Hospital to the City Centre by providing a high quality public transport corridor along Ballinacurra Road.

Future stages of the scheme include the continuation of these measures along O'Connell Avenue to the O'Connell Monument and onwards to Mallow St.

The Ballinacurra Road Bus Lane and its continuation O'Connell Avenue will result in approximately 2.2 km of new and improved bus priority measures with improved journey time savings expected of the order of 10 minutes in peak traffic conditions.

The Ballinacurra Road Quality Bus Corridor provides bus priority measures along Ballinacurra Road from Ballinacurra Creek to Childers Road and operates 24-hours a day, Monday – Sunday. The scheme provided for 800 metres of designated priority space on the approach to Childers Road Junction. The scheme then continues toward Punches Cross, a further distance of 400 metres and includes upgraded pedestrian & cyclist measures, road safety improvements and provision for real time passenger information.

The scheme also includes the provision of 2 new additional pedestrian crossings located at desire locations equidistant along the scheme, high quality footpaths, new public lighting and other underground utility provisions with new and improved bus shelters and on-road and off-road cycling measures.

Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates (CSEA) carried out the following services:

  • Feasibility and Preliminary Design and economic justification
  • Part VIII Planning and presentation to the elected members
  • Detailed Design
  • Contractor selection process (Restricted procedures)
  • Tender of the Works
  • Project management, Resident Engineer and Duties of the Employers Representatives
  • Commercial and financial administration of the contract
  • Health and Safety duties and hand over.

Ballinacurra Road is a residential area in the suburbs of Limerick City and thus the provision of parking was a critical success factor in the delivery of the scheme. CSEA constructed the works and maintained the requirements for parking along the scheme by carrying out accommodation works to private property thus removing parking from the carriageway.
