Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates (CSEA) were appointed by a private client to undertake a flood risk assessment as part of a planning submission for a 20 bed extension to an existing residential nursing home. Nursing home developments are classed as developments with a high level of vulnerability to flood events and it was thus essential to prove that further development of the nursing home was appropriate with regard to flood risk.
The site is located within the catchment of the River Liffey and is adjacent to a section of the Canal. In addition the site had been identified as being within an area that was potentially a flood zone and warranted a detailed study.
Using topographical survey data, LiDAR mapping, historical flood records and consultation with local authority staff and the owners CSEA were able to demonstrate that the site is not located within the flood zone and consequently the type of development proposed was acceptable in the location proposed.
