N77 Kilkenny Northern Ring Road Extension

Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates (CSEA) were involved in the scheme from Inception to Planning, and acted as Designer and PSDP for this 1km extension to the Kilkenny Northern Ring Road from the existing roundabout with the N77 Castlecomer Road to the R693 Freshford Road.

The engineering consultancy and design services provided include:  constraints study and route selection, preliminary design, public consultation, tender of site investigation works, procurement and management of specialists, Environmental Impact Assessment and submission of the Environmental Impact Statement, and land acquisition by Compulsory Purchase Order.

The scheme is complex in its nature as the road will cross the River Nore and 800m of floodplain to the east of the river.

A key part of the environmental impact assessment and preliminary design was a flood impact assessment of the River Nore. The river bed and surrounding land was surveyed for 7km of the river's length, and over 60 No. detailed cross-sections of the river bed were generated. Flows in the Nore River were monitored with 4 No. electronic gauges and 4 No. staff gauges in place from mid 2010 until 2013. Both steady state and unsteady HEC-RAS models were developed for the river and its floodplain by an industry expert. The bridge structure design and multiple large culverts through the embankment on the floodplain will allow the flood water to dissipate, following a flood event, at the same rate and in the same manner as that which occurs at present.
