The  Grand Canal Green Route opened officially to the public on Friday 18th June 2010.

The Green Route opens up a major natural resource, the Grand Canal, for improved amenity, recreational, educational and transportational uses. The route extends from the 3rd Lock in Inchicore to the 12th Lock in Lucan, a distance of 8.5km. It provides a quality pedestrian and cycling path and employs the latest technology in CCTV and public lighting. The scheme includes extensive tree and shrub planting and the provision of enhanced habitats for flora and fauna along the route.

The Green Route project was initiated by South Dublin County Council, Dublin City Council, ESB Networks and Waterways Ireland. The scheme has been developed in a partnership manner by the four statutory bodies and yields dividends for all concerned, benefiting in particular the
communities and businesses in the West Dublin region and has established a blueprint for future
inter-agency projects.
